THE COMPANY
MG is a German brand, released by brewer Michael Gillert. MG stands for Michael Gillert who produces oil based pomades, all by hand. I’m glad to review a pomade from a company out of a neighboring country.
After trying out several pomades, Michael wanted to make one himself. Meanwhile, after many trial and error, lots of sweating, time and money; he has fabricated 3 pomades:
- A medium: granny’s lemon grove.
- A heavy: outlaw.
- A firm: Tokei-Ihto.
- A heavier hold is in the making.
Michael’s interest in the wild west is clear, it is reflected in his pomades. He created a mind image for each of his pomades: imagining to be on the spot, asking himself: what does it look like there, how does it smell there?

MG’s firm hold oil based: the Tokei-Ihto. This pomade comes in a solid, black tin with stickers. The artwork is done well. Info on the screw lid: handmade MG home brew, the Indian Tokei-Ihto, firm hold level (3 out of 4), pomade’s name. Bottom side: with oils for healthy scalp and hair, the brand and pomade, directions, ingredients, made in Germany, charge number, best use before (12M), bar code, 110 ml (3.9 oz), company’s data (all in German). The pomade’s hue is dark yellow.
Story about the Tokei-Ihto, for the interested:
‘Long before the suspected village, he let his noble chestnut mare fall into his crotch and held the white fur up as a parliamentary flag. He had to assume that he had been spied on long ago. In these times it was better to be on the safe side.
For hours he had been riding lonely through this seemingly monotonous landscape of the North American Plains at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Like the Indians, he had learned from an early age to take advantage of the peculiarities of the landscape. And so he always rode in the valleys and avoided riding over the bumps. Despite all the precautions, there they were! And already he was surrounded by five tall Indians. He was certain that only the white fur saved his life. He was escorted to the village. Three in front, he in the middle and two were in the rear. An escape seemed hopeless, but he was also not allowed to flee. Would he finally face him in person? He had heard so many stories about him in the border region. After another hour they reached the village and the leader of the five Indians told him to sit down. A boy immediately took care of his horse. The leader pointed to a tent in the middle of the village that was larger and more eye-catching than the others. The trophy pole, decorated with many scalps, stood in front of the tent entrance.
Then he came out. No doubt – it had to be Tokei-Ihto! Almost two meters tall, slim, strong and sinewy. The long, black Dakota-style hair parted into braids. The typical scars of the passed sun dance were visible on his chest. Petrolatum, lanolin, beeswax, Atlantic cedar bark oil, castor oil, argan oil, meadowfoam seed oil, squalane, citrus lemon peel oil, lemongrass oil, parfum*.

Michael wanted his pomade to have nourishing, conditioning properties for both scalp and hair. He assorted and combined several oils to realize that.
I’ll explain some less commun content:
- Meadowfoam seed oil: derived from the seeds of commercial meadow foam and prized for its exceptional oxidative stability (helps to combat rancidity). A great oil with moisturizing properties.
- Squalane: used in cosmetic products because of the restorative and skin-improving effect that the oil has. It is identical to the skin’s own squalene, which improves the skin, restores its natural balance.
SCENT
Woodsy (cedar), fresh (citrus, lemon , lemongrass), also herbal notes, manly scent. Nice scent referring to the Tokei-Ihto. As told before, the brewer’s imagination of being on the spot, catching the smells, then putting them in the pomade. Rather strong in its tin. In the hair: subtle, whiffs now and then. STYLING PROCESS
My hair type: medium thick, wavy, somewhat unruly hair, medium length. I wear a contour.
My styling equipment: Denman brush D3, Bixby comb and a boar brush.
Application: 3 decent licks into damp hair. Damp works better: less tug, less waves, easier styling.
Scooping: scoops out easy, one finger push and TI comes out. Scoops like a medium on the heavier side. Feels a bit waxy and sticky, you get the slickness of the lanolin, petro and the oils. Non-dry texture.
Breakdown: easy process. A few rubs and the product becomes creamy, a bit waxy, not that sticky anymore and slightly oily. You can say there’s a good amount of oils present.
Working in: slight tension, easy. Even distribution: goes very well.
Combing back: slight resistance. Combing the hair to the side: some tension.
Control: TI tamed my waves and cowlicks very well. Every hair was slicked down easy and didn’t pop out. My sides: well tucked away. Didn’t tend to give flyaways, loose strands of hair. TI offered me good height and great, neat shape. Styles agreeable and comfortable for a firm holding pomade. Great balance between slickness and control/strength!
SHINE
Nice medium shine. Good level of sheen for a firm. Sheen remained.

Firm hold according to the brewer. For me: a spot on firm.
ENDURANCE
Circumstances: Belgian summer weather of 25°C (77° F), hot in the sun (for my standards), no wind, sweating. TI pomade is made in Germany. Germany has the same climate as Belgium. Michael’s pomade can resist moderate summer weather very well. My hair looked good! It kept overall shape, did not sag or split. For people with thick, curly, coarse, wavy hair, this pomade can work. If not, the outlaw heavy hold pomade will do a good job.
RESTYLING
Restyling is key when using an oil based. No problem here. It was not necessary to restyle, just a few minor touch ups.
BUILD UP
Don’t wash my hair on a daily base. Build up for me: water, tonic and 2 scoops to revive everything. This build up feels clean, pretty waxy, manageable.
WASH OUT
Ease of wash-ability is different for everybody. A couple of showers will take out the pomade completely.
